Placemat Size Guide: Standard Sizes by Table and Plate

Quick answer: Standard rectangular placemats are usually about 12 by 18 inches, and round placemats are usually 13 to 15 inches across. Choose a size that leaves a little table showing around each placemat, and measure your table first so every guest fits comfortably.

Placemat sizing is one of those details that feels obvious until the table is set and the plates do not fit. The good news is that a few simple measurements will save you from guessing.

What are standard placemat sizes?

Shape Typical size Best for
Rectangular About 12 x 18 in (30 x 45 cm) Everyday dinners, most dining tables
Round About 13 to 15 in (33 to 38 cm) Round tables, a softer look
Oval or large round 15 in and larger Statement place settings, buffet-style tables

These are general market ranges, not rules. Handwoven pieces vary slightly because each one is made by hand, and some are designed as larger or smaller statement pieces. Some of our fall placemats are listed at 38 to 40 cm (about 15 to 16 inches); check each product page for the exact dimensions of the model you like.

How do I measure my table?

  1. Measure the table length and width. For round tables, measure the diameter.
  2. Allow space for each guest. A common guideline is about 24 inches of table width per person.
  3. Leave a gap between placemats. Two to four inches keeps the setting from feeling crowded.
  4. Check your plate size. The placemat should extend at least an inch or two beyond the plate edge on every side.

How many placemats fit my table?

Round table diameter Comfortable seating
36 in (91 cm) 2 to 4 guests
48 in (122 cm) 4 to 6 guests
60 in (152 cm) 6 to 8 guests

For rectangular tables, divide the table length by 24 inches to estimate how many guests fit on each long side. If you are working with a round table, read our guide on round placemats on a round table.

Which shape should I choose?

It depends on the table and the mood you want. We compare both in Round vs Rectangular Woven Placemats. If you are also deciding between placemats and a table runner, see Table Runner vs Placemats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 12 x 18 inches the standard placemat size?

It is the most common rectangular size, but placemats range from about 12 x 16 to 14 x 19 inches depending on the maker.

How far should a placemat sit from the table edge?

About an inch is typical. Aligning all placemats the same distance from the edge keeps the table looking tidy.

Can I use a larger placemat with a charger plate?

Yes, but choose a placemat that extends beyond the charger by an inch or two on every side so it does not look cramped.
